Here's 2 gin podcasts to enjoy on World Gin Day
There’ll be more people than ever getting into the ‘spirit’ of World Gin Day this year, on Saturday June 8.
It’s no secret that gin is enjoying a resurgence of astronomical proportions. One indication of that is gin sales in Britain, which have tripled in the last decade. And production is starting to ramp up as a result - seven years ago there were less than 50 distilleries in Australia, there’s now over 120.
What better way to celebrate World Gin Day than by hearing about the spirit's current plight in a podcast?
Here's two of our recent conversations to get you started:
1. Sean Baxter from Never Never
One of those new Australian distilleries, that’s also making waves internationally, is Adelaide’s Never Never Distilling Co. Their Southern Strength Gin took out World’s Best Classic Gin at the World Gin Awards in London this year, beating some iconic and established bottles like Tanqueray No. Ten.
Never Never’s brand director and ‘Juniper Freak’ is Sean Baxter, who you may remember from his stint on Masterchef Australia in 2014. We were lucky enough to get Sean on the podcast in the same week as Southern Strength’s win at the London awards, which you can hear in the player above.
Sean takes us through what the win means for the Never Never brand, the story behind how the team came together, as well as their philosophies on gin, juniper and how it should be enjoyed.
2. Olivier Ward from Gin Foundry
If you’d like an in-depth look at the entire gin industry, look no further than our chat with Gin Foundry co-founder Olivier Ward.
Olivier and his team’s job is to sample, review and write about all the different iterations of gin you can think of. They’re also the guys behind Junipalooza, the biggest international meet the maker gin festival that’s held in London, Melbourne and Hamburg.
In our 18th chat, Nicole and Marcus pick Olivier’s brain about where the exploding gin market is at, if it’s peaked, what the deal is with pink gin and the importance of having an authentic brand.
So, what better way to kick off World Gin Day than by stirring down a martini or pouring a trusty G&T, and listening to some fascinating conversation about the botanical spirit?
